Abandonment Issues

Prior to the COVID-19 lockdown, people had been saving money aside for holidays and nights out on the lead up to summer. However, after the 23rd of May, this money had become redundant overnight due to restrictions being put into place.

In 2020, the personal savings rate ended at 14.2%, nearly double what it had been in December 2019. With travel and socialising soon becoming intangible thoughts, some people opted to spend their money on items to keep them entertained, learn a new skill, or purely just to treat themselves.

Within this project, I look at these items people had acquired over lockdown, and create a visual representation of their relationship to these items.

Our relationship to items is largely dependant upon the purpose of the item, dictating its significance by how often we use it, or how we acquired it. We buy, sell, move, lose, find, break, love, hate and lend objects.

In response to these themes, I created a concertina book which holds a series of 8 images, accompanied by an anecdote behind the item.

This project was further exhibited at the Serchia Gallery in Bristol.
